Agartala, the vibrant political and commercial pulse of Tripura, presents an employment legacy deep-seated in structured development. In 1760, Maharaja Krishna Chandra Manikya moved the historical capital of "Swadhin Tripura" to Old Agartala on the banks of the Haora River. Later, in 1849, the capital transitioned to its current, modern site. It was deliberately organized to minimize foreign border incursions and strengthen direct commercial avenues with neighboring regions.

The layout of the modern township was formalized during the 1940s under the vision of Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Debbarma. Inspired by British infrastructure plans, he laid down a grid of wide roads and commercial markets. Following its inclusion into the Indian Union, the city transformed into an institutional administrative engine. Today, it hosts central state ministries, expansive educational councils, and cross-border trade systems via the Akhaura Integrated Check Post.
